Assignment
The goal of this practical assignment is to be able to produce a concept for public space through the lens of data design. By exploring and gathering data through your daily walks you will use your data (and that of classmates) to design an object, service or story to enhance or disrupt the way we use public space.
Where are we interested?
From walking on derives together, we discussed what initially interested us the most from the data set and what means we could use to express our concept.

We looked at things that we have noticed have changed since Covid.

RIOTS
We were particularly interested in riots because it seems that there is anabundance of data that could be used to create something interesting. From facial recognition to phone tracking, we have seen alot of scrutiny recently on the data taken from riots and protests particularly in Hong Kong and Seattle.

Because of this, and the fact that one of us lives next to where the riots in Rotterdam took place, we decided to continue with this theme, and continue research.
what happens if you show the faces in a drill manner?

what person do you see?

Questions after feedback 1 (Eefje)
What standpoint are we taking with this project? Pro-riot or anti-riot?

All riots are different and some seem to be warranted. How can we distinguish between a good cause and a bad one?

How do we relate this project more clearly to Corona?

Has the Covid situation exacerbated or given excuses for more bad portests and riots?

Interesting points
Concept Do-over
Recently we have been trying to tie a story to our idea of merging all of the rioters faces into a visually interesting average. We have been struggling with this and our meeting with Arjen only cemented that.

We are taking a few steps back and looking at what is interesting in the riot data.

Can you discern between a warranted revolt and an unneccessary riot?

Can you see the difference? These two riots may look similar, but the issues that encourage the groups to revolt are lightyears apart.

One is revolting against an authoritarian government trying to gain complete control of its citizens and the other don't like that they have a curfew during a pandemic.

But what about facial recognition during revolts?

Once again this grey area of moral vs. immoral protests causes confusion when we talk about facial recognition.

We embrace it when it is catching idiotic acts, but it also catches moments of warranted rebellion.

Our project is stuck in the grey area. We aither need to take a specific stance or showcase this grey area.

Facial recognition has been tested and seen to have a high bias in terms of accuracy. IT is the most accurate with white males, and the least with black females.
is there maybe too much data?

there are so many people that are being searched for. that it gets hard to proces all of the faces. you probably would only remember the first few that you always see when you open up the page.

Infiltrating the database
If we can infiltrate the rioter database will that be enough proof that we cannot trust people.
